Improve Your Jawbone for Dental Implants
Dental implants are the preferred solution to treat tooth loss because they have the potential to last for a lifetime. Their long-term success relies on your jawbone’s ability to support them. Unfortunately, not everyone has enough bone density in their upper jaw to have the posts surgically placed. That does not mean you cannot become a candidate for dental implants. A sinus lift is a simple procedure that can add height to your bone to allow you to replace your upper teeth. Dallas Dental Implant Center can create the foundation you need to ensure the success of your new smile.
What is a Sinus Lift?
A sinus lift is a surgical procedure that adds bone between your jaw and the maxillary sinuses. Also known as a sinus augmentation, the bone is added to the areas by your premolars and molars to create enough room between the dental implant posts and your sinus membranes. As a result, your sinuses must be moved upward to make room for the new bone.
Do I Need a Sinus Lift?
A dental implant allows you to enjoy the next best thing to your real tooth because it replaces both the root and the crown. To do so, you must undergo oral surgery to place a biocompatible implant post into your jawbone. This serves as a new root, stimulating your jaw to encourage new bone growth. Your jaw fuses to the post to create a stable foundation for your replacement tooth while also providing the opportunity for it to last forever.
Unfortunately, you cannot enjoy these benefits if you do not have adequate bone density in the upper arch. Thankfully, you can become a candidate for dental implants with a sinus lift. Dr. Kwon may recommend the treatment if:
- You do not have enough bone height in your upper jaw.
- Your sinuses are too close to the jaw.
- You have lost bone from periodontal disease.
- You have bone loss from prolonged untreated missing teeth.
What Can I Expect with a Sinus Lift?
Your initial consultation for dental implants will determine if you need a sinus lift. An x-ray and a CT scan will help pinpoint the location for your graft. Bone from another area of your body, a donor, or a cow is used to enhance your jawbone. While under sedation or anesthesia, your gum tissue is opened to expose your jawbone. A small oval is cut into the bone to give access to your sinus membranes. Your sinuses are lifted upward, and the grafting material is packed into the space. Your gum tissue is sutured closed, so you can begin healing. On average, it takes 4 to 10 months to heal from your sinus lift. Initially, you will experience some pain and tenderness, but it will subside within a couple of weeks.
